Kedarnath is a beautiful and sacred spot, nestled in the Kedarnath mountain range, and home to one of the 12 jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Kedar is another name for Lord Shiva. According to legend, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's blessings after feeling guilty about killing their own brothers in the Kurukshetra war. Lord Shiva eluded them, taking the form of a bull and hiding at Kedarnath. When pursued, he dove into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. The remaining parts of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places, and these are worshipped as his manifestations. Tungnath represents his arms, Rudranath his face, Madhyamaheshwar his belly, and Kalpeshwar his locks and head. Kedarnath and these four shrines are collectively known as Panch Kedar.
